FAQ
Choosing an Engine
How do I choose the right horsepower?
Start with your boat's capacity plate, which states the maximum rated horsepower — never exceed it. Within that limit, match power to how you use the boat. Light skiffs and displacement hulls need less power; planing hulls, heavy loads, watersports, and offshore runs need more. Also weigh engine weight and fuel efficiency: a slightly smaller modern four-stroke often outperforms an older, heavier engine while burning less fuel. If you are choosing between two sizes, tell us your boat and typical use and we will give you a straight recommendation.
What shaft length do I need?
Shaft length must match your transom height. Measure from the top of the transom to the bottom of the keel: about 15 inches takes a short shaft, 20 inches a long shaft, 25 inches an extra-long shaft, and 30 inches an ultra-long shaft. The engine's anti-ventilation plate should sit at or just below the keel line. A shaft that is too short causes propeller ventilation and lost thrust; too long adds drag and costs speed and fuel economy.
How do I match an engine to my boat?
Check four things: maximum rated horsepower on the capacity plate, transom height for shaft length, transom and hull capacity for engine weight (modern four-strokes are heavier than older two-strokes), and your existing rigging — steering type, controls, cables, and gauges. Send us your boat's make, model, and year plus your current engine (if any), and we will confirm compatibility before you purchase, including whether your controls and rigging will integrate with the new engine.
What is the difference between 2-stroke and 4-stroke engines?
Four-stroke engines are quieter, more fuel-efficient, cleaner-running, and generally longer-lived; they dominate the current market from portable through high-horsepower classes. Traditional two-strokes are lighter for their power and mechanically simpler, but they burn more fuel and oil. For most buyers today, a modern four-stroke with electronic fuel injection is the better choice — easier starting, better economy, and broad service support.
How do I maintain an outboard motor?
Follow the manufacturer's service schedule, but the essentials are universal: flush with fresh water after every use in salt water, change engine oil and gearcase lubricant at the specified intervals, replace the water pump impeller on schedule, use fresh fuel with stabilizer if the boat sits, and inspect the propeller, anodes, and fuel system regularly. Pre-owned engines from Apex Marine arrive serviced with a fresh inspection checklist; keep to the schedule from there and the engine will reward you.
How do I request product information?
Call +1 754-251-4847, email contact@apexmarineoutboardmotors.com, or use the contact page. For the fastest, most useful answer, include your boat's make, model, and year, your current engine and shaft length if you have one, and what you want the new engine to do. Twin and triple repower projects always begin with a consultation.
Buying From Apex Marine
Are you an authorized dealer?
No. Apex Marine Outboard Motors is an independent multi-brand reseller — not an authorized dealer for Yamaha, Mercury, Suzuki, Honda, or Tohatsu. New engines carry the manufacturer's factory warranty (3–5 years depending on brand), and we confirm warranty eligibility by model before you purchase.
What warranty comes with a pre-owned engine?
Every pre-owned engine includes a 90-day mechanical and compression warranty from Apex Marine, plus a technician compression certificate and multi-point inspection checklist shipped with the engine.
Does the price include rigging and controls?
No. We sell outboard motors only. Controls, cables, gauges, and propellers are not included unless a listing specifically says so. Compatibility between your existing rigging and a new engine requires specialist confirmation — share your boat model and current setup and we will verify it before you buy.
Shipping, Returns, and Warranty
How are engines shipped?
Engines ship crated and fully insured via LTL freight carriers to a local terminal, commercial dock, or residence with liftgate service. Mainland US transit is 3–5 business days; international shipping takes 7–14 business days.
What does shipping cost?
Mainland US flat-rate freight runs $150–$450 depending on engine size and weight, shown before checkout. International freight requires an individual quote — contact us with your destination.
What is the return policy?
Unused, unmounted engines in their original factory crating can be returned within 30 days of delivery, subject to a 15% restocking fee. The buyer covers return freight unless the engine arrived damaged or defective. Mounted or used engines do not qualify for return.
What warranty do new engines carry?
New engines carry the manufacturer's limited factory warranty — typically 3–5 years depending on the brand. Factory warranty coverage can depend on engine origin, registration, and destination, so we confirm eligibility by model before you purchase.
