Ask a room full of bay-boat and bass-boat owners which 150 they would bolt on with their own money and the VF150 V MAX SHO comes up again and again. It is the four-cylinder SHO: a 2.8-liter DOHC inline-four with Variable Camshaft Timing that gives the engine two personalities — clean, economical manners at cruise and a genuinely eager top end when the throttle goes down. At 480 pounds it is light enough to keep smaller hulls floating level and lively.

The numbers behind the reputation are simple. Electronic fuel injection with VCT, a 50-amp alternator for real-world electronics loads, mechanical remote controls that any rigger knows by heart, and a 20-inch shaft for the standard transoms found on most 18- to 22-foot fishing hulls.
