Mercury Outboard Motors for Sale

America's outboard powerhouse: FourStroke efficiency, Pro XS punch, Verado refinement and the Racing division's flagships.

Mercury is the home brand of American boating and the technology pace-setter of the last decade: the V8 and V10 Verado platforms, the supercharged Racing 450R, and a FourStroke range that covers everything from a 2.5 HP portable to commercial SeaPro workhorses. Mercury's model literacy is the most letter-heavy in the business — ELPT, CT, DTS, Pro XS — and worth learning, because those letters are where the value hides.

The range, as a class

Portables (2.5–25) — light FourStrokes, plus the ProKicker trolling line. Midrange (40–150) — the 3.0L 150 FourStroke is famous for being among the lightest and torquiest in class. Pro XS (115–300) — performance-tuned versions for bass, bay and fast fishing hulls. Verado (250–400) — the supercharged-then-V8/V10 flagship family: quiet, smooth, digitally controlled (DTS) with available joystick piloting. SeaPro — commercial-duty derivatives tuned for hours and load. Racing (250R–450R) — the high-output division, from the V8 300R to the supercharged 450R.

Reading a Mercury model code

Mercury strings pack the spec into the name: E = electric start, L/XL = shaft length, PT = power trim, CT = Command Thrust (a bigger gearcase and prop for heavy boats), DTS = digital throttle & shift. Our decoder guide unspools the full system with examples.

Mercury at Apex

Apex Marine is an independent multi-brand reseller — not an authorised Mercury dealer. Our Mercury stock runs from portables and ProKicker kickers through Pro XS and Verado to Racing flagships, in new and pre-owned. Listings are photographed as offered, with hours, rigging and warranty stated per unit.

Ownership notes

Mercury ownership runs on the same service ladder as the other majors — first service early, then 100-hour/annual care — detailed generically in our maintenance guide. Mercury's differentiator is its electronics ecosystem: VesselView displays, SmartCraft gauges and integrated digital controls mean a Mercury rig's instruments genuinely talk to its engines, which matters when you are comparing two otherwise similar listings. When a Mercury listing here includes its displays or control kit, that is real money included — the product page will say so explicitly.

Frequently asked questions

What is Command Thrust (CT)?

A larger gearcase with a lower gear ratio and bigger propeller, fitted to some Mercury models for heavy or slow boats — pontoons, workboats, big loads. It trades a little top speed for much stronger push where these boats live.

What is the difference between Pro XS and Verado?

Pro XS models are performance-tuned for speed-oriented hulls (bass, bay, flats) — lighter and sharper. Verado is the premium refinement line — the quietest, smoothest Mercury experience, with standard digital controls and available joystick piloting on the big platforms.

What does DTS mean?

Digital Throttle & Shift — Mercury's fly-by-wire control system. It gives precise low-speed control, syncs multi-engine rigs automatically and integrates with Mercury's joystick and autopilot systems.

Are Mercury Racing engines suitable for fishing boats?

The R-series (300R, 400R, 450R) is built for high-performance hulls and is widely used on fast centre consoles. They demand the right hull, rigging and prop work — and reward it with output no standard model matches. Tell us the boat and we will advise honestly.

Not sure which motor fits your boat?

Tell us your boat model, transom height and how you use it — we will point you at the right class and the right unit, new or pre-owned.
